Sword vs Axe vs Dagger

This is an in depth look at the numbers when comparing Weapons.

1h Weapons have the same approximate Damage Per Second. 2h Weapons have the same approximate Damage Per Second (DPS).

Average Damage Per Attack (DPA) is +10% for 1h Axe due to 1.1s Weapon Speed.

Rune Direct Damage and Periodic Damage is +10% for 1h Axe, because that is how Rune Direct Damage and Periodic Damage are calculated. Ex: Caltrops will do more damage with a 1h Axe than a 1h Sword. Same for Fire Runes.

Rune Direct Damage does not change between Dagger and Light Shield, since Dagger is 0.0 Speed and Rune Direct Damage is based on Weapon Speed.

Minimum damage and maximum damage for 1h Sword is + or - X% of Average Damage Per Hit.

Minimum damage and maximum damage for 1h Axe is + or - Y% of Average Damage Per Hit.

110% of X% is less than Y% since 1h Sword has a smaller range and 1h Axe has a larger range (Note 1).

Off Hand Dagger is faster with Sword (1.0 Speed + 0.0 Speed= 1.0 Speed) then Axe (1.1 Speed + 0.0 Speed= 1.1 Speed), so 1h Sword plus Dagger versus 1h Axe plus Dagger less of a difference than 1h Sword plus Light Shield versus 1h Axe plus Light Shield.

**Fist Attack is a 1.0s Weapon Speed Attack. Per Fist Attack is a metric similar to Damage Per Second, but removes Haste form the equation.

You can see with Poison Cloud minDPFA, that the DPS of 1h Axe can actually be lower than for 1h Sword, depending on your roll. However, the Poison Cloud maxDPFA of 1h Sword can never be as high as that for 1h Axe.

Because 1h Sword plus Dagger is faster, it actual has a better AvgDPFA then 1h Axe plus Dagger, making it a better Weapon for Melee Shadow Walkers. The better Damage per Tick of Poison Cloud and Runes may make 1h Axe plus Dagger better for Nature Shadow Walkers, depending on how much you can one shot Pop Raid Mobs and how much you do Boss Onslaught.

This is similar to 2h Sword plus Elder Fury being better for Pure Spirit Justicar and 2h Axe plus Elder Fury doing more Damage per Tick of Bleed and Runes.

Elder Fury rank 3 creates 2h Sword 1.15/ 1.3 Speed and 2h Axe 1.25/ 1.4 Speed (Casting Speed/ Damage Speed) which creates less of a difference between 2h Sword and 2h Axe if you are not using Elixir of Speed, and Brutal Strike 3/ Wound 3/ Repeat Combo in Boss Onslaught. The 1h Sword does more DPS in Direct Damage, but the 2h Axe does more DPS with Bleed Stack 3 and Burn Stack 3.
