Crit percentage versus Opponents or Opponent Level Stat Curves

Version 1.7

Crit, Dodge, Crit Power, Physical Resist, Magic Resist, and Defense are stat curves that are dependent on your opponent’s level (player or monster). These are called Opponent Level Stat Curves. Your stat rating stays the same, but against a low Level 3 opponent it is more effective (higher stat percentage), while against a high Level 36 opponent it is less effective.

Examples

If a Brandy has a Crit Rating of 2040 and Brandy’s opponent (player or monster) is level 3, then Brandy has a 46.44% chance of a crit versus that opponent, roughly 4 in 9 hits. If Brandy’s opponent is Level 36 then Brandy has a 26.57% chance of a crit versus the that opponent, roughly 2 in 8 hits, or 1 in 4 hits.

If a Brandy has a Crit Rating of 4822 and Brandy’s opponent (player or monster) is level 3, then Brandy has a 48.42% chance of a crit versus that opponent, almost 1 in 2 hits. If Brandy’s opponent is Level 36 then Brandy has a 35.83% chance of a crit versus that opponent, roughly 1 in 3 hits.

Why you should care about this if you have a high Level character:

If Brandy is fighting a Level 3 opponent with a crit rating of 2040, she has a 46.44% chance of a crit versus her opponent. If Brandy’s crit rating is 4822 then she has a 48.42% chance of a crit versus her opponent. The difference is only +1.98% between the two ratings. This is why high level characters tend to get lots of crits in low Level raids and dungeons. This also illustrates the

If Brandy is fighting a Level 36 opponent with a crit rating of 2040, she has a 26.57% chance of a crit versus her opponent. If Brandy’s crit rating is 4822 then she has a 35.83% chance of a crit versus her opponent. The difference is +9.26% between the two ratings.

Because of these Opponent Level Stat Curves, opponents that automatically match a character’s level can be difficult. Seasonal monsters, incursion portal monsters and Vile Realm monsters match a character’s current level.

Since their level equals the player, if the player has not improved their weapon (the single most important piece of gear for your character) each hit you do will cause less damage. This is because the monster’s defense rating has gone up, increasing the amount of damage it absorbs. Additionally, the monster’s health has gone up, so your hits do less damage each time *and* you need to do more total damage to kill the monster.

Since their level equals the player, if the player has not improved their armor (defense rating), especially Chest, Leg and Helm, each monster’s hit will do much more damage. Not only is the monster doing more damage per hit, but the higher level means your same defense rating (armor) provides a lower percentage of protection.

PvP seems to have a limit of fighting characters plus or minus four levels of your character (Note 1). Crit percentage, and other Opponent Level Stat Curves, will be affected less when the opponents are 1 Level apart, than when they are 4 levels apart. However, characters with a low rating in an Opponent Level Stat Curve (like crit rating) will be more affected by a 4 Level difference. This is a reason to have a high rating (better gear, gem, and tomes)

Examples - Level Change

Level 36 Tess fighting Level 32 Crystal will get a larger advantage to Tess than a Level 35 Crystal. If Tess has a crit rating of 2040, she has a crit percentage of 26.57% versus a Level 36 opponent, which will increase +0.86% versus a Level 35 Crystal (27.43% crit percentage) and +3.45% versus a Level 32 Crystal (30.02%)

Level 32 Crystal fighting Level 36 Tess will have a larger disadvantage than a Level 35 Crystal. If Level 32 Crystal has a crit rating of 2040, she has a crit percentage of 30.02% versus a Level 32 that drops by -3.45% versus a Level 36 Tess. If Level 35 Crystal has a crit rating of 2040, she has a crit percentage of 27.43% versus a Level 35 which will drop -0.86% versus a Level 36 Tess.

Example - Rating Change

Level 32 Zeetha, with a crit rating of 2040, will give a larger advantage to Level 36 Barb than a Level 32 Zeetha with a crit rating of 4822. If Zeetha has a crit rating of 2040 it will drop -3.45% (26.57% from 30.02% crit percentage) but if she has a crit rating of 4822 it will drop -2.81% (35.83% from 38.64% crit percentage).

Level 36 Barb, with a crit rating of 2040, will have a larger change versus a Level 32 Zeetha, than Barb would have with a 4822 crit rating. If Barb has a crit rating of 2040 it will increase +3.45% (30.02% from 26.57% crit percentage) but if she has a crit rating of 4822 it will only increase +2.81% (38.64% from 35.83% crit percentage). This is due to diminishing returns for opponent level stat curves.

Note 1)

This 4 level difference may because they have a similar PvP rating, or it may be a hard limit coded into the matching routine.
