Before BoH v1.3, Dungeon Bosses dropped items and you used them or you could sell them to Majerio for silver coin (silver). It is very similar to many computer games I have played. I ran Lair of the Ice Dragon Dungeon *a lot* and sold all the high level drops for silver.

Since the items for sale in Majerio’s Store were not getting purchased, and the players did not like the Dungeon Boss drops, Venan did not want to follow other Raiding MMO's and have common, uncommon, rare, ultra-rare, and MEGA-ULTRA-RARE Raid Drops. If something was broke (Note 1), why add it to the new Raids? Instead players got a "Raid Drop Currency" called Valor.

Think of Valor as buying Luck. If before BoH v1.3, a Tier 6 Crit Sword had a 1 in 20 chance of dropping, then spending the same Energy in a Raid will give you 1/20th of the Valor needed to purchase the Tier 6 Crit Sword. If a Tier 6 Crit & Crit Power Sword has a 1 in 400 chance of dropping, then spending the same Energy in a Raid will give you 1/400th of the of the Valor needed to purchase the Tier 6 Crit & Crit Power Sword. Instead of getting a Shadow Walker only rare item for your War Mage, like some MMOs, you could buy your War Mage anything you wanted with Valor.

Different Valor represents the different possible Loot Tables. This also side stepped the need to build Trade into the game, allowing Venan to add Trade once the underlying mehcanics had been worked out. This is a huge reduction in resources for a small company, and a huge reduction in headaches for palyers.

Gem Slots are also a response to MEGA-ULTRA-RARE Raid Drops. Instead of Farming Raids, you can spend silver to unlock Gem Slots. Each Gem Slot unlocked makes your Gear much more powerful. Before BoH v1.3, items that improved two of your Stats were uncommon, three Stats were rare, and four Stats usually demanded the player provide screen captures.

In v1.2 you could sell the Tier 6 Crit Sword, dropped by Ice Lord Vallus, for silver. In v1.3 you could sell both the Tier 6 Sword, and a Tier 2 Crit Gem, for silver to Majerio. One you got by random chance (v1.2), the other you bought with “Raid Drop Currency” (Valor in v1.3). Also in v1.3, you could choose to sell just the Sword or just the Gem, you did not have to sell them as a whole unit.

RPG Note: Majerio sells you Gear up to Tier 9 for silver. But he *gives* you Tier 6 and Tier 10+ Gear as a reward for taking part in Raids that defended Glenfort. You are just cashing in on his good favor.

RPG Note: Up convert is because Majerio can tell you have already maxed out your Gear of that Tier.

Player Note: Up convert is because Venan likes us.

Historical Note: At the start of BoH 1.3, players had only Tier 1- 6 Gear. Each piece of Gear usually improved 1- 2 Stats, but the Stats bonuses could not be changed in any way, Stat affected and strength of effect were both fixed (OLD Style Gear Augments). All Guilds were new when v1.3 started. New Guilds must unlock each Raid by running lower level Raids, from squire Valor to Knight Valor (Knight Valor was Max Tier). Not all Guild members are the same Might, so a Guild can unlock a Raid before it has the players, and characters, to run it. Up convert helped with this transition from BoH 1.2 to 1.3.

In BoH v1.3, Dungeons still dropped silver, but no longer dropped random Gear. Instead the Dungeon Bosses dropped more silver than ever before, so you could buy your Tier 1 to Tier 9 Gear. Instead of OLD Style Gear Augments, that you could not change, remove or add to, you get blank Gear and add Augment Gems. In BoH 1.2 if you got a Health +30, Phys Resist +80, Magic Resist +60 Sword, you had to keep or sell the whole item. In BoH 1.3, you can put any Gems you want into your Sword.

But a game with just silver Boss Loot Drops, and Valor, could be a) boring and b) you might not explore all nine Augment Gems. So players were pleasantly surprised to find out you could get Whole Gem Drops from Dungeon Bosses (Note 2). To make it fair, Farming Whole Gem Drops cost 1/3 to 1/4 the Energy of Farming Valor for Gems.

People complained that Whole Gem drops were too rare. This was mainly caused by lucky individuals posting their success in chat and Forums. (Ex: “I got 3 Gems the last 3 times I killed the Hunter”). To help people better see, and understand the odds, Venan added a “Whole Gem Drop Currency” called Shards, and made Whole Gems less common. Just like Valor, think of it as buying Whole Gem Drop Luck.

Different Tier, and color, Shards represent different Loot Tables. But the average energy required to get a Whole Gem drop, or a Gem from a Shard lockbox, remained the same. It was still 1/3 to 1/4 the Energy of Farming Valor for Gems. The only difference between the two methods of obtaining Whole Gems from Dungeons, is one Gem is unknown until you open the Boss Dungeon Loot Chest, and the other is unknown until you open the Shard Lockbox.

Historical Note: People complained there were no MEGA-ULTRA-RARE drops in Dungeons. Whole Gem Drops were just not exciting enough for them. So Venan appears to have added ultra-rare, Crafting and Enchanting Recipe drops.

Another has been that the equipment in the Hero Store isn't that great and there is nothing to spend Hero Tokens on. We get a good share of the drops from this or that monster aren't great or don't make sense, and why is it this item level instead of that one.
